Now is a great time for United Utilities to be sponsoring the MEN’s Green Awards.  It’s 100 years since Manchester was at the centre of a global environmental revolution when the modern wastewater treatment process was invented right here in Davyhulme. The green thinking has continued since then and the water company has just opened a new sludge recycling centre at the Davyhulme plant  – where Manchester’s waste is recycled into farm fertiliser and enough renewable electricity from biogas to power the entire plant. Phil Sweeney of United Utilities said: “Manchester is a growing city and we all aspire to a vibrant and healthy environment.  We’re already planning a major modernisation scheme at Davyhulme so that the works can treat Manchester’s sewage to even higher standards and continue to safeguard our environment for future generations. “We’re looking forward to celebrating the achievements of all the individuals, businesses and community groups across Manchester who are also doing their bit to make this a truly green city.”
